Class Descriptions

All classes at Y.O.G.A. for the Soul begin with purposeful breathing, meditation & scripture as practitioners recline on their backs in Resting Pose. Our classes end as they began with our practitioners in Resting Pose reaping all the healing benefits of their practice. The teacher closes out with prayer as she offers our signature lavender scented eye pillows

At Y.O.G.A. for the Soul we diffuse 100% therapeutic grade essential oils, and we burn soy-based candles made by a local vendor.

THE CLASSES LISTED BELOW ARE IN THE GENTLE SERIES – these classes are suitable for beginners & persons desiring a slower, gentler practice, and deep stretches. Seasoned practitioners are welcomed.

1. Gentle Y.O.G.A. – suitable for all levels

This peaceful class is intended to restore the body, mind and soul as a variety of basic postures suitable for beginners or persons requiring a gentle class are offered.  Modifications are offered where necessary. Postures are held for a minimum of five breaths & include reclining, seated and standing postures. With continued practice over time, the body, mind and soul will relax and be restored, and balance, strength and flexibility will be attained.

2. Stretch & YIN Combo – suitable for beginners & persons desiring deep stretches for releasing tension in the body.

This class offers a variety of postures intended to stretch muscles as well as deep connective tissue and fascia. Most postures are either seated or reclining, and props such as blocks, blankets and bolsters are used for added assistance and comfort for the body. Note: one or two standing postures may be included.

The room is warmed slightly to facilitate the release of tension in the body as the slower stretches target the lower back, hips and other tension holding areas of the body. Each posture can be held for one – three minutes

3. YIN Inspired Stretches – suitable for beginners & persons desiring deep stretches for releasing tension in the body.

The definition of YIN is to Yield. These deep tissue stretches focus on the connective tissue, such as ligaments, tendons and fascia in tension holding areas of our bodies like the lower back, hips, legs, knees, neck & shoulders. Postures offered are generally seated, kneeling or reclining and are held for as little as one minute, or for as long as 5 minutes with the assistance of blocks, bolsters and blankets. This slow stretch allows the body to YIELD and to open up in tight, tension filled areas. The meditative nature of the class also calms & restores the mind.

4. Stretch, Core, Balance Y.O.G.A. – suitable for all levels

This class offers postures designed to strengthen the Core, increase flexibility through gentle stretching, and achieve stability and balance over time. Each week we may alternate our focus between Core, Stretching and Balancing, or we may practice postures that incorporate all three categories.

5. RESTORATIVE YOGA for the Soul – suitable for all levels

Join us and end your day relaxing to the sound of healing music and the soothing smell of therapeutic grade essential oils. Rest, Restore and Reset your body, mind and soul as we assist you into 6 restorative yoga postures on your mat. Your body is supported by blocks, bolsters and blankets as you recline on your mat giving your body the time it needs to release the stress of the day. Each posture is held for 8 -10 minutes.  You will leave refreshed and ready to finish your day with a calmer disposition.

THE CLASSES LISTED BELOW ARE IN THE MIXED LEVEL SERIES – these classes are suitable for persons who have practiced yoga previously, and for persons who desire a challenge, or desire to go deeper into their practice.

1.  Y.O.G.A. for the Soul Mixed Levels

We awaken the body slowly in a reclining position and build on each posture moving from our backs to seated, to the knees, and up to standing as we build in intensity. A variety of beginner postures with a few variations are offered that will help to build balance, strength & flexibility over time. Modifications are offered as needed by the teacher. This class may include a series of postures or a slow flow, which is movement linked by the breath.  Some posture series also known as “Son” Salutations heat the body while other posture series or slow flows, although calming, still require strength and focus on the breath as we move through the series.

2. Y.O.G.A. using Light Weights

This is a Yoga Sculpt class that combines Strength with Grace by adding 2 or 3lb hand held weights to select yoga postures. The weights stabilize the body & helps to isolate & engage different muscle groups. The added benefits of this practice include building a strong core, stability and bone density.

3.STRENGTH & BALANCE

We awaken the body slowly in a reclining position & build on each posture moving from our backs to seated, to the knees, and up to standing as we build in intensity. We encourage our practitioners to challenge themselves as we offer variations to the postures holding each for a minimum of five to eight breaths.

This class may include a series of postures or a flow, which is movement linked by the breath.  Some posture series also know as “Son” Salutations heat the body while other posture series or flows, although calming, still require strength and focus on the breath as we move through the series. Inversions, Arm Balances & Backbends will be introduced for clients who desire a challenge.

Pre Natal Y.O.G.A. ~ ” Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.” Psalm 127:3

At Y.O.G.A. for the Soul our intention is to nurture and support our mother’s to be as they journey through this sacred time with their unborn baby. Our classes will focus on scripture, breath work, stress relief, & a time to pause & reflect. We will practice postures that will strengthen the mother over time and prepare her body, not only for child birth, but most importantly for the precious, new,  little person that will be a part of her life going forward. We will encourage our mother’s to journal their experiences so they can share this precious time of growth and life with their child in later years.
